East Lothian Council sets its budget today (Tue 21 Feb).
A council consultation late last year highlighted potential cuts to services and facilities and increased charges, but in light of the additional £160million secured for local government by the Green MSPs, there is an additional £2.9million for East Lothian Council. On top of that, there is a further £3m from the changes to upper bands of Council Tax.
Jason Rose, Green candidate for Musselburgh, said:
"The revised figures adding a total of almost £6m to the Council's finances clearly show the positive impact of the Green budget deal at Holyrood. I look forward to Green councillors bringing an equally collaborative approach to East Lothian Council."
Sarah Beattie Smith, Green candidate for Dunbar & East Linton, said:
"Previously threatened cuts appear to have been shelved but we cannot be complacent. East Lothian Council must invest in services following years of cutbacks, and the increased charges for social care must be challenged. Greens on the Council will continue to fight against cuts and will work hard to protect and improve services."
