Local members of the Scottish Green Party took their message of climate action into the air as they flew kites at Gilbertson Park in Lerwick on a blustery Saturday afternoon.
Messages to world leaders such as “Green New Deal”, “Stop Fast Fashion” and “Just Transition” were written by Shetland climate activists on pieces of bunting which were hoisted into the air by large lift kites, operated by airborne wind energy engineer Rod Read, who also demonstrated a spinning kite turbine, a prototype of a larger kite that can generate 10kW of electric power.
Shetland Greens co-coordinator Martin Randall said, “With the debate about the Cambo oilfield raging and COP26 just about to begin, the eyes of the world are on Shetland. Now is the time for us to raise our voices and say that we’ve had enough of a world in which a love of money takes precedence over everything else. That system has caused poverty, isolation and environmental destruction. Scientific forecasts show that if we keep the status quo, the consequences will be dire.
