Boris Johnson visit during lockdown unnecessary
Boris Johnson’s decision to visit Scotland today to ‘save the union’ is unnecessary during COVID restrictions, the Scottish Greens have said.
The Prime Minister is due to visit Scotland today in an attempt to tackle ‘separatism’.
Responding, Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said: “Normally we would welcome a visit from the Prime Minister, given every time he comes to Scotland support for a different future for our country goes up.
“But this visit comes just days after the UK reached the horrific milestone of 100,000 dead, a legacy of poor decisions by Boris Johnson himself. He championed the failed ‘herd immunity’ approach, outsourced our testing, locked down too late, excused the reckless behaviour of Dominic Cummings and funded the virus with ‘eat out’ vouchers.
“His trip cannot be described as an essential journey, especially as he refuses to listen to the majority of Scots who want to return to the European Union rather than continue on his disastrous Brexit, which is now unopposed by Labour and the Lib Dems. 20 opinion polls in a row have backed Scotland having a say over its future, so to refuse to plan for a new referendum would be fundamentally undemocratic.
“The Scottish Parliament already voted to call for a new referendum thanks to the Scottish Greens. If the election in May again returns a majority of pro-independence MSPs then Johnson will have no choice.”
