Caledonian Sleeper can be central to a people's ScotRail

Taking the Caledonian Sleeper into public ownership is a big step towards a fully-integrated, affordable and publicly-owned rail service that works for people and for the planet, say the Scottish Greens.

Scottish Greens transport spokesperson Mark Ruskell MSP said:

“I am delighted that we’re finally able to deliver a fully-integrated, publicly-owned ScotRail, now complete with a world-class sleeper service.

“Alongside the rail unions, we’ve been clear from the start that a publicly owned sleeper service has to be central to a people's ScotRail.

“It can help us on our climate journey by delivering a much needed shift from plane to rail and boosting better connectivity with our friends in Europe.

“With tickets often costing in the hundreds of pounds, there is a lot of work to do to ensure that the sleeper service is an affordable one.

“Nationalising the service is absolutely the right choice.

“Now we need to ensure the sleeper is a high quality and low-cost option that can compete with airlines and become the first choice for overnight commuters.

“There is a rail renaissance happening across Europe, and Scotland needs to play its part."
