Commitment to listen to Named Person practitioners is welcome

Alison Johnstone MSP, Children & Young People spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today welcomed a statement in Parliament from Deputy First Minister John Swinney on the Named Person scheme.

A Supreme Court judgement in July confirmed that providing a named person for every child does not breach human rights but asked for clarity around information-sharing provisions.

Alison Johnstone MSP said:

"Providing protection and support for all children is of paramount importance, and the Supreme Court judgement has helped to focus the debate about Named Persons. Those who continue to oppose the principle of the scheme are on the wrong side of that judgement. The issue at hand is how information is shared.

"The commitment to listen to practitioners, parents, charities and young people is welcome and shows that the Scottish Government is taking time to get this right. More work needs to be done to counter misinformation and ensure parents and young people understand the details and benefits of the scheme."
