Communities vital to coastal protections

Communities along Scotland’s coastline can lead efforts to improve and restore their environment, according to the Scottish Greens.

In Prliament, MSPs debated protecting Scotland’s coastal environment, led by Greens MSP for the Highlands and Islands Ariane Burgess.

The motion recognises the work of 19 community groups across Scotland as part of the Coastal Communities Network.

Speaking ahead of the debate, Ariane Burgess said: “We are in a nature emergency in Scotland, and our coastline is often the front line of the climate emergency too. Restoring our marine and coastal environment is an urgent necessity but is also an opportunity for economic recovery.

“Communities across Scotland are already leading the way on nature restoration and the stewardship of their environment, and I encourage these groups to apply for Nature Restoration funding, delivered by Greens in government.

“Given the levels of degradation and pollution in some parts of Scotland, there is a clear need for more communities to get involved, and it will be up to parliament and government to support that.”
