"DARK DAY" FOR ROYAL MAIL THANKS TO LIB DEMS
The Scottish Greens say that voters should punish Liberal Democrats at the next election for their reckless attack on the Royal Mail.
Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable gave formal notice to the stock exchange today that shares in Royal Mail will be sold off to private investors in the next few weeks.
Almost 80% of Scottish MPs at Westminster opposed the legislation to allow the privatisation of this much-valued public service, and MSPs from Labour and the SNP joined with Greens tosupport a motion opposing the move at Holyrood.
Alison Johnstone, Green MSP for Lothian and a member of Holyrood’s economy committee, said:
"This is a dark day for a much-valued public service and voters will not forget that it was the Liberal Democrats that sold off the Royal Mail to investors motivated by profit. Just like the bedroom tax, this is an example of Scottish politicians voting strongly against a damaging policy and having it imposed anyway by Westminster. The CWU are entirely justified in seeking a ballot on industrial action as a tool to defend this public service."
