Deepfake technology could undermine our democracy
Deepfake technology could be used to spread distrust, promote and share malicious and purposefully misleading content and undermine our democracy, warns Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman.
Ms Chapman, who has been targeted with deep fake audio technology before, was commenting in response to new research by the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research and the University of Edinburgh for the Scottish Parliament.
Maggie Chapman said:
"It's a good thing that the Scottish Parliament has commissioned this research and that they are taking this technology seriously.
"The video that was made of me may have looked like me and sounded like me, but it was clearly designed to mock rather than to make people think it was real.
"Deepfakes are already having an impact around the world, but the truth is that we are still in the early days of what could be a very dangerous and disruptive technology.
"We don't know what its capabilities will be in a few years time, but we do know that it could be used to spread distrust, promote and share malicious and purposefully misleading content and undermine our democracy."
