Deposit Return Scheme will be vital boost for recycling and our environment

Mark Ruskell MSP says scheme will be vital to increasing recycling and cutting waste and a big step towards cleaner streets and communities.

Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will be a vital boost for recycling and a big step towards cleaner streets and communities, say the Scottish Greens.

This follows correspondence from the UK Treasury to the Scottish Greens Co-leader, and Minister for Circular Economy, Lorna Slater MSP, which said “The UK Government fully supports the environmental objectives of the Scottish Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) and is committed to ensuring that the DRS functions effectively.”

The Scottish Greens environment spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, said:

“The Deposit Return Scheme will be vital to increasing recycling and cutting waste. It will be a big step towards cleaner streets and communities.

“Unfortunately, the kind of opportunistic political attacks that we have seen from the Tories and, increasingly, Labour are being done to undermine confidence in the scheme. They are less concerned about the environment than they are about party politics.

“This scheme will be a watershed moment for waste reduction in Scotland. It will bring us in line with the many other countries across Europe and beyond, who already have successful schemes in place, and will help us to reach our environmental targets.

“Tens of thousands of plastic bottles and cans are littered every day in Scotland. By working together we can change that. I am proud that the Scottish Government is taking action and that it is being spearheaded by a Green Minister.”
