Downing Street is failing to act on the climate crisis
The latest UK Climate Change Committee report confirms that the UK government still has no credible plan to cut aviation emissions, decarbonise buildings on the scale that is needed or move on from oil and gas, according to the Scottish Greens.
The Scottish Greens Environmental spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, said:
This report confirms that the UK government still has no credible plan to cut aviation emissions, decarbonise buildings on the scale that is needed or move on from oil and gas.”
“There will be no second chances when it comes to our environment. The situation is desperate, but they are still tinkering at the edges and failing to take the climate action that is so badly needed.”
“It is easy to talk about the cost of living crisis and the climate crisis as if they are distinct and separate crises. They are not. They are the same crisis, and many of the solutions are the same.”
“The report recommends a Net Zero Tax Review to ensure that taxes can support our drive to net zero. This is definitely welcome, but, beyond that, we need to see a real green industrial strategy with a plan to rebuild our communities, and investment to secure a just transition to renewable energy.”
“Only by doing this will we transform our economy, cut household bills and protect our planet while creating thousands of new and skilled jobs. That is the scale of ambition we need. This is the challenge of a generation, and Downing Street needs to start acting like it."
