Electrofishing trial decision criticised by Greens
The Scottish Greens have criticised a Scottish Government decision to launch a trial of electrofishing for razor clams, a fishing technique that uses a low electric current.
Concerns have been raised that the method can leave other marine life vulnerable to predators and the Scottish Greens’ environment spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP says that a move away from dredging to electrofishing still won’t allow for the “marine environment to recover”. [2]
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP, Mark Ruskell said:
“Dredging the sea bed for razor clams has a horrific impact, but to switch to electrofishing instead won’t allow our precious marine environment to recover. EU laws that protect the environment should not be undermined by the Scottish Government in its eagerness to grow industries beyond the carrying capacity of the ecosystems they rely on.”
