First Minister urged to oppose climate-wrecking Peterhead plan
If the Scottish Government is serious about standing up for our environment, then they must oppose the climate-wrecking plan to expand the gas-fired power station in Peterhead, says Scottish Greens Co-leader Patrick Harvie.
Speaking at First Minister’s Questions, Mr Harvie highlighted a recent study that revealed that the emissions from this power station could be five times worse than the companies that would profit from it have admitted.
Mr Harvie urged the First Minister to demand a new environmental impact of the polluting proposal.
In a question to the First Minister, Mr Harvie said:
“The re-election of Donald Trump is particularly dangerous for climate policy; this is someone who has peddled climate conspiracy theories for many years.
“But such threats exist in Scotland too. The First Minister’s government is on the verge of making a decision on a new fossil fuel power station at Peterhead.
“Last week the researchers at Carbon Tracker revealed that the emissions from this power station could be five times worse than the companies that would profit from it have admitted.
“The First Minister has the power to demand a new environmental impact assessment, to make sure these companies come clean about the pollution their scheme would cause.
“Will he do so, and does he accept that until he does, Ministers may be breaking the law if they sign-off this reckless fossil fuel development?”
