Fossil fuel lobbyists at COP 27 are like Dracula at a blood bank
Fossil fuel lobbyists should have no place at the COP climate conference according to the Scottish Greens, who compared their attendance to Dracula at a blood bank.
This follows analysis from Global Witness, which found that 636 fossil fuel lobbyists are in attendance, an increase of 100 since last year’s summit. [1]
The Scottish Greens environment spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP said:
"Having fossil fuel lobbyists at a climate summit is like inviting Dracula to a blood bank. They will sink their fangs into anything with a profit, without ever looking at themselves in the mirror.
"They aren't attending COP in record numbers because they want to tackle the climate crisis. They are doing it because they want to continue with business as usual and the same terrible policies that have led us to this point.
"Those lobbyists and the industries and views that they represent are a big part of the problem, not the solution. The polluters have inflicted chaos, havoc and destruction around the world.
"They have been all too aware of the consequences, but that hasn't stopped them from profiting every step of the way.
"The climate emergency is the gravest emergency that we face, and that we will ever face. We need real and meaningful climate action, with major targeted investment in renewables and an end to all new oil and gas exploration. The money is there and so is the technology, the only thing missing is the political will.
“COP 27 cannot become yet another failed summit, but, if the fossil fuel lobby gets its way then that is what will happen.”
