Greens back call from leading Scottish figures to block Brexit

The Scottish Greens’ have joined with 60 leading public figures in Scotland who are attempting to block the Brexit process.

The letter, published in a national newspaper and signed by former First Minister Henry McLeish, calls for a national debate and a rethink on Brexit.

Ross Greer MSP, the Scottish Greens’ external affairs spokesperson, said:

“This is a well timed intervention by significant figures from across Scotland and one that cannot be ignored by the UK government, particularly on a day when another damning report has been published showing how Brexit uncertainty is likely to damage the Scottish economy and housing market.

“The Tories’ Brexit process is now a complete farce and the Greens will seek to block it at every opportunity. Their Brexit Bill represents a significant threat to the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales, attempting to impose UK-wide arrangements on what are devolved powers rather than negotiate for agreed frameworks. What’s even more damning is how the Tories' plans will see three million EU citizens across the UK potentially lose their rights without even a vote in parliament. This is a government so lacking in support that they are set to rely on the powers of a 16th century mad king to avoid the elected parliaments of these islands.”
