Greens back new help to access council tax support
Scottish Greens are welcoming a new service from Citizens Advice Scotland to help people apply for assistance with paying their Council Tax bills.
The charity has this week launched a new online tool - https://www.checkmycounciltax.scot/- to help people check if they are entitled to reductions, deductions or exemptions.
The number of Scottish households receiving Council Tax Reduction has declined by 78,970 since 2013, prompting concerns that the scheme isn’t well known and that thousands of people could be missing out.
Scottish Greens Parliamentary Co-Leader and Social Security Spokesperson Alison Johnstone MSP said:
“We know that around £1bn in social security support goes unclaimed every year because people don’t know about their entitlements, or aren’t well-supported enough to apply.
“That’s why the checkmycounciltax.scot tool is so important, as it will allow people to easily find out whether they might be entitled to a Council Tax Reduction, and the other concessions that are available.
“Greens encourage everyone who needs some help paying their council tax to use the tool and find out what support they might be able to access."
