Greens call for Liz Truss to sack Kwasi Kwarteng over economic crisis
The Scottish Greens are calling on Prime Minister Liz Truss to sack her Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, over his mishandling of the UK economy.
Economy spokesperson Maggie Chapman MSP has accused him of being “utterly out of his depth” after a week of economic turmoil sparked by the Tories’ mini budget last Friday.
But she insisted the buck stopped with the Prime Minister who she said must act in the best interest of the country.
She said:
“The Chancellor has shown he is completely and utterly out of his depth. The Prime Minister must remove her long-time friend from office before he can inflict any more damage.
“His reckless, economically clueless and downright dangerous mishandling of the UK economy will impact millions of households and families who were already being hit by cruel Tory cuts.
“Ultimately the buck stops with Liz Truss, and she must act to restore public confidence.
“She is the Prime Minister and, having made the appointment and set the economic agenda, she has been utterly complicit in the Chancellor’s announcements. They will both be judged on what it is they do next.
“World leaders are spooked and markets are worried. There are demands for a recall of Parliament and even her own MPs are lining up to demand answers and resignations.
“If she won’t go, she should at least do the next best thing and show the Chancellor the door, for all our sakes.”
