Greens call for update on seven year long rendition investigation

The Lord Advocate should come before parliament to provide an update on a now seven year long investigation into the possibility that Scottish airports were involved in rendition, Scottish Greens Justice Spokesperson John Finnie MSP has said.

The former Lord Advocate Frank Mullholland instructed Police Scotland to enquire into claims that Scottish Government owned airports were complicit in the process of abduction and torture in June 2013.

Mr Finnie has repeatedly raised the need for transparency around this matter with the Scottish Government, and has once again written to the Lord Advocate on the matter, calling on the senior law officer to come before parliament to provide an urgent update.

John Finnie MSP said:

“It is now seven years since the Lord Advocate told parliament that he would instruct police to investigate whether airports in Scotland were used to conduct horrific human rights abuses. The process of rendition saw people abducted and tortured. Understanding whether airports in Scotland played any role in facilitating this process is clearly in the public interest. I urge the Lord Advocate to come before parliament and update MSPs on this matter at the earliest opportunity.”
