Greens call on government to catch up on student testing

Commenting on reports that mass testing is to be rolled out ahead of Christmas for students living in halls in England, [1] Scottish Greens education spokesperson Ross Greer MSP has renewed his call for students here to be offered mass testing too.

The West Scotland MSP first made the call for testing of all students wishing to return home for Christmas in a letter to Higher Education minister Richard Lochhead during the early September student halls outbreak.

Ross Greer MSP said:

“I wrote to the universities minister in September asking him to deliver a support package for students that included mass testing to make a safe return home at Christmas possible. Whilst he thanked me for the constructive proposals in my letter, no mass testing programme was put in place for university students or staff. It’s essential this is delivered as soon as possible and with the capacity to test every student tenant in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Given how they’ve been treated so far, the least the Scottish Government can do is ensure students are able to safely return home for the holidays.”
