Greens condemn Tory contempt for Scotland's democracy.
Liz Truss has shown a contempt for Scotland's democracy, according to the Scottish Greens. This follows comments in a Tory leadership debate last night, in which Liz Truss was cheered for calling the First Minister an "attention seeker" and saying she would ignore calls for an independence referendum.
Scottish Green Co-leader, Lorna Slater MSP, said:
Liz Truss showed a total disrespect for Scotland's longest-serving First Minister and a contempt for everyone that voted for a pro-independence majority of MSPs in last year's election. She knows that the democratic case for a referendum is unanswerable, so she would rather patronise us and ignore us."
“Neither Truss nor Sunak would offer the fresh start that we need. They have both backed every single disastrous policy that Johnson has implemented. They supported his failed Brexit deal and the universal credit cuts that plunged thousands of people into poverty. They are both happy to let the oil and gas companies rake in record profits while millions of people are suffering.”
“It doesn't need to be this way. Our future will be decided by the people of Scotland, not by Downing Street.”
“We have a mandate for a referendum and we will do everything we can to deliver it. If they block all other avenues then we will contest the next UK general election as a de-facto independence referendum. In that circumstance, every vote for the Greens will be a clear vote for a fairer, greener and independent Scotland.”
