Greens hail growing support for an independent Scottish republic
Scottish Green co-leader Patrick Harvie has welcomed a new poll from Norstat that has shown 59% support for an independent Scottish republic, excluding undecided voters.
A recent report by Republic, an anti-monarchy campaign group, put the “true cost” of the Monarchy at over £500m a year.
Mr Harvie said:
“Equality has always been at the heart of our vision for Scotland, and that is completely incompatible with an outdated, unjustified and anti-democratic institution like the Monarchy.
“With independence we can do so much more to build a fairer and more representative Scotland, and having an elected head of state is an essential part of this.
“The Scottish Greens have long supported an end to the monarchy, and it’s clear that a growing number of people across Scotland agree.
“Scotland could thrive as an independent republic, rather than staying beholden to antiquated ideas and customs that do not serve our country or its citizens well.
“The future that I want for Scotland is as an independent republic where power rests with the people rather than being passed down like a family heirloom.”
