Greens highlight unicef call for greater global vaccine support

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie has said Scotland’s voice should be added to calls for greater donations of vaccines from rich countries to the developing world.

Responding to the First Minister’s statement in parliament this afternoon, Mr Harvie highlighted a letter to G7 leaders noting that the international COVAX programme was 190 million doses short of where it needed to be.

Patrick Harvie said:

“The First Minister has repeatedly highlighted the race between the virus and the vaccine. But we only win when everybody wins. We’re only safe when everybody’s safe.

“The international COVAX programme is 190 million doses short of where it needs to be. If developing countries get doses late it won’t lead to mass vaccination, it’ll lead to mass wastage.

“Earlier, larger scale and more predictable donations of vaccines by rich countries to developing nations are required urgently and it’s vital that Scotland’s voice is added to that call.”
