Greens responds to social care death in service announcement
Responding to the news that the Scottish Government is to introduce a £60,000 payment to the named survivor of any social care worker who dies if they don’t have any death in service plans of their own, Scottish Greens Parliamentary Co-Leader Alison Johnstone MSP said:
“For far too long care workers have been underpaid and undervalued, so I am pleased to see that the Scottish Government has finally committed to offering this small level of comfort to the families of care workers who have died while working on the frontline. Care workers and their trade unions deserve enormous credit for persisting with this issue and achieving this result.
“It’s vital that there is a more fundamental review about how we value our care workforce and how we protect them while they’re at work. This crisis has shown how vital the social care sector is to society, and how its fragmented and precarious nature puts workers at risk. This must be addressed by the Scottish Government as a matter of urgency.”
