Harvie begins first day of Holyrood 2016 Campaign trail in Glasgow Kelvin

As the first day of official campaigning begins for Holyrood 2016, Patrick Harvie, Co-Convenor of the Scottish Greens will be meeting students and activists at Glasgow University. Speaking at a Refugee Campaigns Day organised by GRAMnet, the Glasgow refugee, asylum seeker and migrant network, Mr Harvie said:

“Europe faces its biggest refugee crisis since the second world war, yet the response from too many countries has been shameful. We know that Scotland can be a welcoming nation and whilst it is the Westminster government who should be ashamed of their response to this crisis, the next Scottish Parliament must assert its right to take responsibility in areas like devolved public services and protecting asylum seekers from discrimination and prejudice.”

He will be joined by Ross Greer, Scottish Greens’ MSP Candidate for West of Scotland and spokesperson on Europe and External Affairs. Mr Greer said:

"This week we launched the Green manifesto for how 'Scotland Can Be A Global Citizen', calling for greater representation of Scotland abroad, building links in areas of devolved policy such as health and justice. There is much more to be done at home though and Green MSPs will fight for better housing, education and support for all those who need it, including those who have sought refuge here."

Following his speech, Patrick Harvie joins Ross Greer to meet with young people and hear what they are hoping for from this election before beginning further campaigning in the Glasgow Kelvin constituency, where Mr Harvie is standing.
