Harvie criticises DWP plans to close Glasgow job centres
The decision by the Department for Work and Pensions to close half of the jobcentres in Glasgow has been criticised by the Green MSP for the city.
Scottish Greens’ co-convener, Patrick Harvie MSP said:
“While it’s good that the DWP says no jobs will be lost as a result of this, staff will be looking for more certainty on what their future working arrangements will be, especially as we get closer to Christmas. For those out of work, the UK government seems to be going out of its way to make the prospect of finding employment even more difficult.
“Not everyone has access to reliable internet or can afford the cost of the numerous phone calls needed to speak to prospective employers, so moving these centres further away from the people they serve in Glasgow will do nothing to reduce unemployment in the city.”
The eight job centres understood to be closing are:
- Parkhead - Norman House
- Bridgeton - Muslin Street
- Easterhouse
- Castlemilk Arcade
- Langside - Battlefield Road
- Anniesland - Herschell Street
- Cambuslang - Main Street
- Maryhill Road
