HARVIE TO TELL LONDON AUDIENCE OF YES VOTE OPPORTUNITIES

In a keynote speech just 6 weeks before the Scottish independence referendum, Scottish Green Party co-convener Patrick Harvie MSP will tell an audience in London that a Yes vote offers the best chance of showing a fairer society across the British Isles is possible.

Since launching their distinctive Green Yes campaign last November the Scottish Greens have taken their message of opportunity to hundreds of communities across Scotland, directly appealing to undecided voters.

Tonight (8 Aug) at Camden Town Hall Mr Harvie will speak alongside Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, outlining why a Yes vote goes beyond Alex Salmond and the SNP, and why independence won't mean Scotland turns its back on neighbours in need.

Patrick Harvie MSP said:

"The referendum has prompted a remarkable period of debate and political engagement in Scotland. Greens have played an incredibly important role, putting forward bold ideas that a fully-fledged Scottish Parliament could implement to improve our economy, our democracy and our role in the international community.

"Some commentators and No campaigners have lazily portrayed a Yes vote as Scotland cutting friends adrift, when in fact it's an opportunity to lead the way and show that there is an alternative to the unfair austerity, social division and international aggression pursued by Westminster.

"Greens the world over believe in bringing power closer to the people, and for equality to be at the centre of decision-making. There's an opportunity to be seized in Scotland on 18 September and if we use our new powers wisely we can only spur on our colleagues elsewhere to keep pushing for fairness, democracy and peace."

Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, said:

"We support our Scottish colleagues, who chose independence for themselves in 1990, in their strong and effective push to build a new model of society on our isles, one where the economy works for the common good, not just for the few, and the vulnerable are protected and supported.

"And we look towards the exciting possibilities of real change for England and Wales that Scottish independence would bring. Given that our political framework hasn't significantly changed in nearly a century, since women got the vote, this is an opportunity to push for a written constitution with rights for citizens enshrined within it."
