INDY FINANCES: HARVIE HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR BALANCED ECONOMY
Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow, is highlighting the opportunity presented by independence to rebalance the Scottish economy and tackle problems racked up by successive Westminster governments.
Today (28 May) the Scottish Government published figures reaffirming that an independent Scotland would start with a strong financial position, while the UK Treasury's costings of independence "badly misrepresent" research by the London School of Economics, according to one of its professors.
Patrick Harvie MSP said:
"Scotland is undoubtedly a wealthy country, but the opportunity we have with the referendum isn’t just about a mythical 'average' household being a little bit richer or poorer. If we take the chance to pursue a different approach from successive Westminster governments, we can share the wealth of the country far better, benefiting the great majority.
"We could avoid repeating the mistake of allowing our capital city to become a giant suction machine and instead prioritise a truly balanced economy so that all regions of Scotland benefit from our collective wealth.
"And by taking responsibility we could properly tackle the elephants in the room like unburnable fossil fuels and chronic inequality. Of the two options on the ballot paper in September it is a Yes that will give us the chance to build a legacy that will transform our economy and serve future generations well."
