Investment in teachers and graduates in nurseries is a step in the right direction
Alison Johnstone MSP, Children & Young People spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (18 Jan) urged Scottish Ministers to prioritise the Living Wage for nursery staff in light of today's announcement by the First Minister.
Nicola Sturgeon has promised £1.5million to recruit more teachers and graduates for nurseries in deprived areas.
Alison Johnstone, Children & Young People spokesperson for the Scottish Greens and MSP for Lothian, said:
“Focusing investment in the most deprived areas to ensure qualified teachers and graduates in nurseries is a step in the right direction. Early learning and childcare should be a high quality career given its importance. We need to see childcare staff paid the Living Wage at the very least, and this is something Scottish Ministers should consider in the forthcoming budget.
“Investing properly in the early years workforce is vital. Childcare shouldn’t just be about quantity; it should be about quality. Childcare shouldn't be viewed purely as an economic tool; with qualified and well-paid staff it can be an early education for the best start in life.”
