IPCC REPORT SHOWS RADICAL POLICY SHIFT NEEDED

Responding to publication of the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Scottish Greens are warning that the Scottish Government needs to consider radical policy shifts.

The report, which cites almost 10,000 scientific publications, concludes that concentrations of greenhouse gases are at levels unprecedented in 800,000 years and that human influence on the climate system is clear.

It also projects that global temperatures are likely to rise by up to 4.8 degrees C by the end of the century.

Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow and Co-convener of the Scottish Greens, said:

"This tone of this report is clear - the need for action to reduce emissions has never been more urgent. Scotland has world-leading annual climate targets but we've missed the first two and the government's feeble proposals and policies have been widely criticised.

"If we are remotely serious about living up to our ambitions we need to see radical policy shifts. Putting off action on transport, housing, energy and food is now undeniably irresponsible. A truly sustainable Scotland is possible - let's pursue that positive goal with vigour."
