Johnson climate target is hot air

Demand Climate Action

Boris Johnson’s new climate target is ‘hot air’ without the action to meet it, the Scottish Greens have said.

Commenting, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said: “The National Audit Office have called the UK target of a 68% emissions cut by 2030 a ‘colossal challenge’, and in Scotland the 2030 target is for an even bigger cut, but this is a challenge we absolutely must take on. Our survival depends on it.

“This is not about small lifestyle changes, it is about government action. Unfortunately, as we see further road expansions and commitments to expanding fossil fuel exploration and air travel, these targets are just hot air.

“This comes just a day after Denmark showed the leadership that's lacking in both the UK and Scotland, by cancelling its latest oil and gas licensing round and setting a date to end fossil fuel production."

“Compared to the meagre £4bn spent on his speculative climate wish list, the whopping £16.5bn Boris Johnson is throwing at defence spending tells the real story. If he is going to get serious about meeting these targets, he needs to put the UK’s money where his mouth is.”
