Kwarteng cannot avoid responsibility for financial disaster
Kwasi Kwarteng cannot avoid his responsibility for the financial disaster that he was the joint architect of, according to the Scottish Greens.
This follows the former Chancellors claims that he warned the then Prime Minister, Liz Truss, to slow down their economic plans.
The Scottish Greens finance spokesperson, Ross Greer MSP said:
"Kwasi Kwarteng can try all he wants to avoid responsibility for a disaster he was the joint architect of, but we all know how laughable that claim is.
"His mini-budget was the catalyst for the economic crash that happened on his watch. He tested the libertarian Tory fantasies he shared with Liz Truss to their limits and they proved to be every bit as disastrous as many of us warned they would be.
"He may have been humiliated by his short tenure, but the real price for his incompetence is being paid by the millions of people who were impacted by the decisions he made.
"There is no doubt that Liz Truss was ultimately and primarily responsible. She made many reckless decisions, including the appointment of Kwasi Kwarteng. It's ludicrous to claim that as Chancellor he wasn't really responsible for what happened though.
"The issues run far deeper than the years worth of damage that the two of them did in the space of a few weeks though. Over the last 12 years successive Tory governments have inflicted cuts, austerity and pain.
“The characters in Downing Street can change every few weeks, months or years but the result is still the same, for as long as Scotland is in the UK we will suffer under Tory governments we did not elect."
