Majority of Scots want government action on energy efficiency & cold homes
Responding to a poll by WWF showing that the majority of Scots want government action on energy efficiency and cold homes, the Scottish Greens say that the solution must begin by addressing Scotland’s “social and economic problems”.
The poll by the conservation organisation states that 69% of Scots support more public investment in energy efficiency and that 87% of Scots want to see an end to cold homes in Scotland within a decade.
Scottish Greens’ housing spokesperson and Lothian MSP Andy Wightman said:
“The findings of this poll could not be clearer. People in Scotland want immediate action on ensuring that no one has to live in a cold home by 2025. That’s a reasonable deadline to aim for, but it will only be met if the government shows willingness to take immediate action. We’ve been telling ministers for a long time that as well as repairing and improving the energy efficiency of homes occupied by those in fuel poverty we need to do much more to address the social and economic problems and inequalities that both cause the problem and are exacerbated by it.
“There is never a more timely reminder of the detriments of living in a cold home than at this time of year. Yet, since the target to eradicate fuel poverty was recently missed, people across Scotland will be looking to the Scottish Government to take heed and actively work towards tackling this issue.”
