Mossmorran communities being failed say Greens

Mossmorran flaring

SEPA is either not up to the job of protecting the communities surrounding the Mossmorran gas plant or doesn’t have the powers to do so according to Scottish Greens Parliamentary Co-Leader Alison Johnstone MSP.

Speaking at First Minister’s Questions this afternoon Ms Johnstone called on the First Minister to “end the misery this plant is causing,” after communities were once again subjected to intense periods of flaring which NHS has said impacts the health and wellbeing of local people.

Alison Johnstone MSP said:

“This week the skies over Fife were once again ablaze from flaring at ExxonMobil’s plant at Mossmorran. The lives of those living in the shadow of this fossil fuel relic have been made a misery. NHS Fife has also confirmed that the ongoing mismanagement of the plant has seriously impacted on the health and well-being of local people.

“The First Minister continually tells us that Sepa has this matter in hand but it’s clear to anyone who is paying attention that this simply isn’t the case. Sepa either doesn’t have the necessary powers to deal with this crisis or isn’t capable of doing so. Either way the First Minister is ultimately responsible and must provide a resolution to this ongoing crisis urgently.”
