MSP Calls for action on Kilcreggan ferry cancellations
Green MSP Ross Greer has called for answers on a recent increase in number of cancellations of the Gourock-Kilcreggan Ferry.
According to the Ferry’s twitter feed, there have been severe cancellations- in most cases no service all day- due to “technical” issues on 12 days since the start of May, leaving ferry users forced to drive or to take a replacement bus for 50 miles via Erskine Bridge. This is in addition to regular suspension of service due to adverse weather conditions, especially in winter. The ferry is run by Clydelink on behalf of SPT, and is timetabled to make 13 return journeys per day on weekdays, taking 13 minutes for each crossing. At Gourock, the ferry links with a regular train service to Glasgow and Paisley.
Ross Greer, Scottish Greens MSP for the West of Scotland, said: “This ferry is a vital service for many people, especially the community around Kilcreggan. These people need a reliable link across the Clyde and good access to the rail network. While I accept that occasional cancellations are to be expected, for example due to poor weather, this does not explain the increase in cancellations due to breakdown or technical issues.”
“I’ve written to SPT to ask that they take action to ensure that current problems are resolved so that local people can once more rely on the service, and not fear being left at Gourock staring at a cancelled ferry and a long journey home.”
