National Ferry Travel Scheme extended to all young islanders
A scheme giving free ferry travel to 16-18 year olds will be extended to all young people under 22 living on Scottish islands, the Scottish Greens have announced.
Speaking at the Scottish Green Party Annual conference in Dunfermline, co-leader Patrick Harvie revealed that the Scottish Government has agreed to work with ferry operators to expand the scope of the National Ferry Travel Schemes which operates on both west coast and Northern Isles services.
Under the current scheme 16-18 year olds are entitled to four free island to mainland trips a year. This will now apply to all islanders under 16 and aged 19-21.
Mr Harvie said:
"One of the landmark successes of Scottish Greens in government has been free bus travel for under 22s. With today’s announcement we are taking a significant step forwards in recognising the circumstances of young people on the islands.
“I am delighted that we are extending the current National Ferry Travel Scheme from its current coverage of 16-18 year olds to all U-22s. It is an important step towards recognising the travel needs of young islanders and opening up the country.
“With our groundbreaking work on abolishing peak fares on all Scotrail services, we are building a transport system that works for our communities.
“It’s yet another example of Greens in Government determined to make all forms of public transport more affordable.”
