Questioning cost and length of national testing

Responding to news that new national testing could last up to 50 minutes for pupils as young as five, and that the cost of delivering the tests in P1, 4, 7 and S3 is estimated at £12million over five years, Ross Greer, Education spokesperson for the Scottish Greens and MSP for the West of Scotland, said:

“The basis of national testing is incredibly flimsy. This policy was approved with little discussion or oversight and now we learn it comes with a high cost and potentially lengthy examinations for very young pupils. And teachers are already under huge pressure.

"A better investment in our education system would have been measures to reduce workload, recruit more staff and reverse cuts to Additional Support Needs.”
