Scotland can take an active, powerful and compassionate role in the world

The Scottish Greens are today (25 March) pledging their support for Amnesty International's campaign to "put human rights at the heart" of the Holyrood election, coinciding with publication of the party's "global citizen" mini-manifesto detailing its pledges on international affairs and democracy.

The mini-manifesto published by the Scottish Greens, "Scotland Can Be A Global Citizen", pledges action to:

-Establish a Scottish diplomatic service.
-Support membership for the Scottish Government as an observer on international bodies such as the United Nations, World Health Organisation and Nordic Council.
-Increase the Scottish Government’s International Development Fund and Climate Justice Fund.
-Push for the Scottish Government to unilaterally recognise the existence of Palestine as a state and support the rights of Kurdish peoples in the Middle East.
-Support a policy of boycotts, divestments and sanctions against entities, such as Israel and Russia, involved in the illegal occupation of territories.
-Position Scotland as a global peace hub.
-Establish a Scottish peace centre tasked with researching conflict issues.
-Curb the arms industry.
-Pressure Westminster into getting rid of the nuclear weapons stored on the Clyde.
-Support the ‘Green In’ campaign for EU membership.
-Say no to TTIP.

The Amnesty campaign calls for support to:
• Save the Human Rights Act
• Continue to welcome refugees to Scotland
• Support efforts for a coordinated response to the refugee crisis in Europe
• Put human rights at the heart of Scotland’s international relations

Ross Greer, Europe and International Affairs spokesperson for the Scottish Greens and MSP candidate for West of Scotland, said:

"Scotland can take an active, powerful and compassionate role in the world. We can play our part in facing the challenges of refugee crises, climate crises and conflict head on as well as building strong international links in areas of devolved policy such as health and education.

“Scottish Greens believe strongly in human rights and we support Amnesty's campaign to put human rights at the heart of Scotland's international relations.”
