Scottish Government must work with Unions to challenge Amazon corporate greed
The Scottish Greens have welcomed the Scottish Government’s commitment to engage with trade unions such as the GMB to protect Amazon workers in Gourock. This followed an Urgent Question in the Scottish Parliament by Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer about the company’s announcement that it will shut the site.
The Scottish Greens MSP for the West of Scotland, Ross Greer MSP, said:
“Amazon is a monumentally profitable company, and its owner, Jeff Bezos, is the very embodiment of corporate greed. It has a long and shameful history of dodging tax and is infamous for its hostility to its own workers when they have tried to organise through trade unions.
“This shameful move will have a devastating impact on people and families in Gourock. I welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to work with unions such as GMB, to which a number of Amazon Gourock staff hold membership, to protect the interests of the hundreds of workers now facing a very uncertain future.”
