Scottish Greens call for Facebook to revoke ‘licence to abuse’ rule changes
Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman has called on Meta to rethink controversial new rule changes that allow users to call LGBTQ+ people mentally ill.
The new guidelines, published this week, include the line “we do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation.”
Ms Chapman said: “This is a shameful change and gives a licence to abuse LGBTQIA+ people. It will make Facebook an even more hostile and less welcoming space.
“There is no excuse for targeting or abusing people because of their gender identity or their sexuality, and it is deeply irresponsible for Meta to be condoning this kind of cruelty.
“The largest social media apps are becoming increasingly nasty and unpleasant places for marginalised people and groups, while the billionaire owners are profiting from peddling division and bigotry.
“We know the harm that these hurtful tropes can do, and the damage caused by online bullying. I urge Meta to rethink its dangerous decision and to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all their users.”
