SCOTTISH GREENS CONFIRM HARVIE WILL CONTEST KELVIN CONSTITUENCY
The Scottish Greens today (31 May) confirmed that party co-convener Patrick Harvie will contest the Glasgow Kelvin constituency at next year's Scottish Parliament election.
In last year's European election Kelvin was effectively a three-way tie between Greens (4764 votes), Labour (4799) and SNP (4817).
The decision to contest the constituency has been taken by the Glasgow branch of the party.
Patrick Harvie has been the Scottish Green MSP for Glasgow region since 2003, and tops the party's list for 2016. Polling has consistently put the Scottish Greens on around 10 per cent on the regional vote for next year's election, suggesting 8-12 MSPs, with at least one in each of the eight regions.
Mr Harvie said:
"I am delighted to be seeking the support of voters in Kelvin constituency, as well as across Glasgow region. It's been an honour to represent the city in the Scottish Parliament for the past twelve years and I believe the time is right to contest the constituency vote.
"We have a strong team in Glasgow, with four Green councillors who have made a huge impact in their communities. With that track record, we are campaigning to win Kelvin in 2016."
Zara Kitson, former Green MP candidate in Glasgow and 2nd on the list for Glasgow region in 2016, said:
"Due to his hard work and constructive attitude in parliament and in Glasgow, and as a leading figure during the independence referendum, Patrick has rightly earned a big reputation. I know so many people will be eager to see him elected to serve the Kelvin constituency.
"We have an excellent team in place to join Patrick in representing Glasgow in the Scottish Parliament, and our booming membership means we have activists keen to deliver a big result in 2016."
