Scottish Greens: Johnson plan to ‘live with COVID’ is reckless

Scottish Greens have branded the UK government’s decision to relax COVID restrictions as ‘reckless’ and ‘irresponsible.’

The party’s health spokesperson, Gillian Mackay MSP, has called for the UK government to provide support for people and businesses that are hit by this terrible virus, rather than ignoring it and pretending it doesn't exist.

The requirement for infected people to self-isolate in England will end this week, while free Covid testing will end for the general public in England from 1 April.

The Scottish Greens health spokesperson, Gillian Mackay MSP, said: “Ignoring Covid won't make it go away. People are still catching it every day and hundreds of people a week are still dying from it.

“The approach that Boris Johnson and his colleagues are taking is extremely reckless and irresponsible. It is characteristic of a government that has consistently failed to recognise the seriousness of the situation.

“This choice feels far more influenced by the Prime Minister's polling rather than the science. That is no way to make a decision that impacts millions of people. It totally undermines the four nations approach and could have devastating consequences.

“We cannot wish COVID away and ending protections could see even more cases and make it far harder to control. The UK government should be providing support for people and businesses that are hit by this terrible virus, not trying to pretend it doesn't exist.”
