Scottish Greens praise Tartan Army's hidden heroes
Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay has hailed the Tartan Army’s hidden heroes who helped make sure fans got to see Scotland’s historic fourth Euro 2024 qualifier on the bounce and get home safely.
Steve Clarke’s side won 2-0 against Georgia at Hampden amid dramatic scenes after six days worth of rain fell in a burst leaving the pitch waterlogged, and the game suspended and delayed for more than 95 minutes.
The stadium DJ kept the capacity crowd entertained, catering and security teams coped with soaked supporters, while a herculean effort saw water squeezed from the pitch allowing the match to resume safely.
The suspension also put unexpected strain on the transport network and related operations as tens of thousands of jubilant fans made their way home.
Gillian Mackay, her party’s spokesperson for sport, said:
“Massive congratulations go to the men’s Scotland team and Steve Clarke for notching up another victory in what has been a spectacular run of results that we all hope will carry us on and into Germany.
“But the real Hampden heroes last night were those who worked tirelessly to sort the pitch, to keep the fans fed, watered and above all safe, and all those outside the stadium who helped make sure people got home safely.
“They deserve huge praise and thanks.
“There is nothing like attending a live game, especially when Hampden is rocking to a great Scottish victory.
“Not everyone is able though, which is why I’ll also keep pushing for our national games to be shown on TV for free so that all of Scotland, young and old, can all share in this magical experience.
“As last night proved, football is the people’s game and passion. I want to make sure that as many of the Tartan Army as possible get to enjoy it and share in the joy of our hidden heroes, our footballing footsoldiers and those who love our beautiful game.”
