Scottish Greens respond to IPCC warning

The UN intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) issued a “a dire warning about the consequences of inaction,” on climate change this morning (28 Feb 2022).

In its latest report the IPCC warned that accelerated action is required to adapt to the climate crisis, as well as rapid, deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

Commenting on the publication, Scottish Greens environment and climate spokesperson Mark Ruskell MSP said:

“This report underlines the importance of accelerating climate action immediately if we want to secure a liveable future.

“The solutions to the climate crisis already exist. Scotland has 25% of Europe’s offshore renewable energy potential so it’s vital that we see an urgent just transition from the fossil fuel industries of the past to that renewable future.

“In the wake of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine it is more important than ever that Europe ends its overreliance on fossil fuels. Investing in Scotland’s renewables potential brings benefits for the economy, planet and for long term peace and security.

“We already knew that bold action was needed, but this report makes clear that not only do we need to escalate climate action, but we need to do so now.

“We are running out of time. This report must act as a wake-up call to all governments that climate action simply cannot wait.”
