Scottish Greens: Tory 'levelling up' fund is bad for the planet

Scottish Greens have described the UK Government’s ‘levelling up’ fund as a 'joke', as it contains no mention of tackling the climate and nature emergencies or providing new jobs as part of a just transition.

UK Minister Michael Gove has launched a White Paper he says will “transform” the UK.

Commenting, Scottish Greens economy spokesperson Maggie Chapman said: “Instead of levelling up communities, these plans send the UK hurtling backwards by reversing devolution and ignoring the biggest issues facing us including rising inequality and the climate crisis.

“No one believes the Tories want to reverse the decades of deindustrialisation they inflicted on communities. Even if they did, there is no acknowledgement that in the 21st century investment needs to support a just transition away from high carbon industries and road expansions to create the jobs we need in the future. In fact, they are so out of touch they even approved a new oil field in the North Sea this week.

“The UK Government’s plans are a joke. Placing mayors in English towns and building motorways will do nothing to redistribute wealth or save the planet.”
