Scottish Labour told to come clean on Brexit
The Scottish Greens have challenged Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard to come clean about his party’s position on Brexit, after UK Labour leader Keir Starmer cancelled a keynote speech on devolution to concentrate on Brexit.
Starmer had been due to detail his plans to revive party support in Scotland during an address to Edinburgh University on Friday, but Labour has postponed this indefinitely while Brexit trade negotiations reach their conclusion.
Responding, Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said: “Keir Starmer is so desperate to get Brexit done he’s shelving his plans for Scotland. Now Richard Leonard needs to come clean about whether his party supports Scotland being dragged out of the EU against its will.
“Treating Scotland as an afterthought is what has got Scottish Labour into the position it is. The party blocked the devolution of employment law, and now it has put Scotland’s future on the back burner.
“Workers in Scotland deserve better representation at a political level than a branch office, which is why many of them are thinking about Scotland taking its place at the European table as a fairer, greener independent country.”
