Student Funding: Greer Welcomes Review, Questions Debt
Ross Greer MSP, Education spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (25 Oct) welcomed the announcement of a review of student finance as figures show the number of students being paid grants has fallen nearly five per cent in a year as an increasing number are taking out loans.
Ross Greer MSP said:
“The statistics published today show greater support for poorer students but it is mainly in the form of loans rather than straightforward grants. We must move away from loan-based support which is clearly leaving students, particularly those coming from the most deprived backgrounds, saddled with significant debts.
"The SNP came to power in 2007 promising to abolish student debt. Nearly a decade later, it’s time that actually happened.”
