Surge in support for Scottish Greens
A new poll showing high levels of support for the Scottish Greens is a huge endorsement of the party’s performance in government and puts them on course to overtake the Scottish Conservatives, a party MSP has said.
Ross Greer said a combination of the party’s delivery of popular policies such as the winter rent freeze and the UK Government’s mis-handling of the cost of living crisis clearly shows how voters are rejecting Tory ‘negativity’.
The new Ipsos Scottish Political Monitor in partnership with STV puts the Scottish Greens on 13% on the regional vote, which would be a five point jump on the party’s 2021 showing, itself a record result.
Significantly the Tories has fallen to 14%, down nine points, and consistent with other polls in recent months, which puts them in clear danger of being overtaken by the Scottish Greens as the third biggest party at Holyrood.
It comes as the Tory UK Government at Westminster continues to block Scotland’s right to a referendum on independence, a Conservative-driven cost of living crisis and farcical Scottish Tory scaremongering against Green policies at Holyrood.
Mr Greer said: “After eighteen months in government, the Scottish Greens are recording record levels of support.
“That’s because we are delivering the changes which people and planet really need, whether it’s free bus travel for young people, an emergency rent freeze, preventing new coal mines north of the border or boosting the wages of the lowest paid workers. This is what we’ve achieved within the limits of devolution.
“The public want politicians who will work every day to put their ideas into practice, rather than score cheap points and offer nothing but negativity. The rise of the Scottish Greens and continued decline in Conservative support show that quite clearly.”
