Tory budget for super rich fails millions hit by austerity
Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget is designed to reward wealthy bankers and the super-rich at the expense of millions of families and households plunged into poverty by Tory cuts and failures, say the Scottish Greens.
Commenting after the budget, the Scottish Greens public finance spokesperson, Ross Greer MSP said:
“The Chancellor says it is a new era, but with tax cuts for the rich and Thatcherite gimmicks like 'investment zones' for corporation wanting to pay even less tax too, he’s trying to take us back to the worst of the 1980s.
“This is a budget for bankers, the super-rich and big polluters. It is targeting entirely the wrong things and will only serve to help the rich get even richer while punishing people on low incomes and those who rely the most on public services.
“It is those in Downing Street and their millionaire friends who caused this crisis, and it is their class who should pay for it. Instead, they are cutting the benefits of vulnerable and low-paid people and attacking trade union rights while delivering tax cuts for the highest earners and lifting the cap on bankers bonuses.
“Scotland has already suffered 12 painful years of Tory failure that we did not vote for. We cannot afford any more. Next year’s independence referendum will give us the opportunity to take a better path and build a recovery that works for people and the planet, rather than a Tory Britain that only works for the rich and powerful.
“We may have a new Prime Minister, but these are the same old Tories doubling down on the same failed policies.”
