We still have the legacy of that New Town planning but people are telling us that they feel the pride has gone out of the place and things have been left to slide. Once dubbed the 'Town of Tomorrow', local Greens say that East Kilbride can be the best again if we make the right investments, build a strong local economy and renew local democracy.
'East Kilbride, Town of Tomorrow', is the name of a film made about our pioneering New Town. People came from all over the world to see town planning at its best. Scottish Greens Council candidate, Kirsten Robb, is urging local people and decision makers at all levels to build on the town's legacy in its 70th anniversary year, to be pioneering once again and to give the town a new lease of life.
Kirsten said, "Growing up in East Kilbride, I enjoyed the benefits of decent housing, local jobs and a healthy environment. We still have the legacy of that New Town planning but people are telling us that they feel the pride has gone out of the place and things have been left to slide. I want to work with local people to change that by ensuring our local services get the investment they need and that we build a stronger local economy with a renewed democracy putting power in local people's hands".
Green MSPs recently gained £9.4 million for South Lanarkshire services but with Green Councillors we could do so much more. One example of this is using East Kilbride's great college and business expertise in construction and renewable energy to serve the needs of the town. Green Councillors would exploit this opportunity and push for more investment in social housing and energy efficiency and set up a new local energy company. This would cut poverty and create hundreds of new jobs and apprenticeships."
