Fossil fuel giants SSE and Equinor are set to expand their gas-fired energy production in the North East of Scotland as they attempt to green-wash gas power with so-called “Carbon Capture and Storage” technology at Peterhead power station.
These plans bust through Scotland’s climate targets, with the proposed station set to emit five times as many emissions as the developers claimed for over a decade longer than Scotland’s renewed net-zero target for 2045. We cannot let the Scottish Government fall at the first hurdle and approve these plans.
The Scottish Government currently backs Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), despite the fact that CCS has never produced the predicted capture rates and several CCS projects have collapsed because the technology cannot deliver on promises. This unproven technology is being used to justify climate inaction, and the government’s lack of willingness to create real solutions for both people and planet.
We need your help to stop the expansion of gas-fired energy generation at Peterhead!
In the face of the climate crisis, community members and workers must be at the centre of genuine just transition plans. We cannot allow workers to be fobbed off with false approaches that perpetuate business as usual and promise the impossible: lifetime job security in oil and gas.
