Families and households across Scotland are being hit by the worst cost crisis for decades, with rising energy costs, food bills and inflation having a devastating impact. Meanwhile, the oil and gas company executives are laughing their way to the bank, with record profits.

It’s time for a proper and meaningful windfall tax on the obscene profits oil companies are making. It has to be an effective tax, not like the one that Rishi Sunak introduced as Chancellor, which is far too low, and actually rewards companies for new drilling operations. The Treasury must remove the incentives to reinvest in oil and gas and set it at a higher rate, one which actually raises the funds needed to tackle the current crisis.

The money raised could be used to deliver real relief for people here and now, while supporting a major investment in renewable energy and allowing us to finally break the link between fossil fuel prices and household bills.
